Campaign Preparation: Smoke on the Water - Warrior

Something something
amputation
Finally, of my minimum four-man band, the most straightforward character, the warrior/hunter kinda dealy. I think this should be fairly straightforward so let's get this show on the road without further ado.

Things We Need

This character needs to be a survival expert, a hunting expert, and accustomed to dealing with other fighters. The nice thing about TL0 is there aren't a lot of weapons to worry about... but there are still choices, and since I'm riding that sweet sweet talent train, let's make a super modular talent for our warrior that is a little bit like Born Soldier, but more like Born Survivalist, or some such. So... taking a bit here and there from Outdoorsman. I think I want a modular talent that has the following:
  • Brawling
  • One Stone Age Melee Attack
    • Axe/Mace, Knife, Spear, Staff, or Two-Handed Axe/Mace
  • One Ranged Weapon
    • Bow, Sling, Spear Thrower, or Thrown Weapon(Spear)
  • Savoir-Faire (Military)
  • Soldier
  • Tactics
  • Camouflage
  • Fishing
  • Naturalist
  • Tracking
  • Survival
That comes out to 10 skills, making it the 10/lvl type of talent, For benefits, probably similar to either of those for Born Soldier or Outdoorsman.
With the key ingredient, let's put this guy together. The main thing is that he should have a fighting and hunting/survival-ish skill of 14, and we want this guy to have a tiny bit of responsibility, so maybe military rank 1 as well.
This Template comes out to:

Warrior

55 points
Advantages:  Born Survivalist 4 [40]; Rank (Military) [5]
Skills: Naturalist and Tactics, both (H) IQ+2[1]-12; Soldier (A) IQ+3[1]-13; Survival (Beach/Island) and Tracking, Both (A) Per+3[1]-13; Brawling (E) DX+4[1]-14; Fishing (E) Per+4[1]-14; Savoir-Faire (Military) (E) IQ+4[1]-14
Choose one of Axe/Mace, Spear, Staff, or Two-Handed Axe/Mace (A) DX+3[1]-13 or Knife (E) DX+4[1]-14
Choose one of Bow, Spear Thrower, or Thrown Weapon(Spear) (A) DX+3[1]-13 or Sling (H) DX+2[1]-12

You get one each of the ranged weapon and melee weapon for talent purposes, after that, the talent does not count towards more weapons.
That said, it would probably behoove a player to add the Wrestling skill, potentially a backup melee weapon skill (knife is a decent backup), and maybe the improvised weapon perk. Shield is also a very good skill to consider if using a one handed weapon. For a big shield, get the shield-training perk. I plan to be using the Pulling Rank features for Patron, so one more additional rank would probably be good as well to make it easier to take advantage of the patron benefit. Combat Reflexes are a must as that will get your parry active defenses to 11, a really good start. I'd also recommend somehow increasing Basic Speed to 6, either by itself, or through raising HT and DX, and getting 2 more Striking ST, either by itself, or by raising ST wholesale; the benefits of ST for a low-tech warrior are tremendous. No weapon skill should be below 14, and getting tactics and Naturalist up to 14 would be really helpful as well. If you go the route of increasing rank, really consider investing in Leadership, or maybe even the Born Soldier Talent to go along with it.

  1. I'm not terribly convinced weapon skill - particularly melee ones - should be as high as 14. Then again, I'm notoriously conservative on skill levels. Based on my understanding of primitive hunting techniques, the stabbing usually comes as a finishing blow, rather than primary means of inflicting damage.

    1. It was a lot more conservative than what I'm used to using in Dungeon Fantasy, and it's the benchmark for which I shot for all the other templates. It is a little high, but having the characters able to do at least their main thing well is what I wanted.
