Cross-Post: GURPSDay Summary and Reflections

What a startling release.
Kick down the door, get on the floor, everyone do the dinosaur.

What's interesting this week?

What did I find interesting everywhere else? I like this character on Hard Maths. Well put together, though I think I prefer a bit more mechanical commentary on posts like this.
I like Mailanka's posts arguing both for and against Mass Combat. I think I see a lot of kneejerk reactions about it that amount to "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" (Some guy that is really popular and a good writer said that mass combat is not good once, so that means it is not good ever) or cargo cult mumbo jumbo (I want to make a game about war, so I must use these rules to make it good,) and it happens on both sides, so it's kinda neat to see reasonable thoughts from both sides but from one person.
GURPS Calculator's GM Board is getting pretty respectable. Each of the small elements on GCS up to now have been somewhat helpful, but now it's reached a point where its sum is greater than its parts. It's just about to hit an interesting little period I predict where boring but necessary things are all done, and now the really cool stuff can start to be made.

Other Thoughts and Self Reflection

Peter posted what he bought in the sale, so I guess I'll post mine too.
  • Power-Ups 2 - Perks: It's decent, but I wish it were a bit better than a catalog
  • Power-Ups 6 - Quirks: Actually pretty good, and scratches the itch that #2 didn't.
  • Action 1 - It's a lot of stuff, haven't gotten around to reading 2 yet to put it into context, but it at least has a good amount of content to chew on.
  • Action 2 - Haven't even given it a cursory glance yet
  • Monster Hunters 1 - A lot of cool abilities, and a slightly unique paradigm as I'm used to characters with only 250 points at max.
  • Monster Hunters 2 - Haven't read this one yet either

I also got the new Pyramid as my subscription just kicked in. A lot of good stuff, Probably among the best Dungeon Fantasy themed issues in Pyramid so far (Alt Dungeons I is still at the top though for me.) This might be #2 or #3 on the list.
Also, got the Dungeon Fantasy pyramid collection PDF, which is neat. I have most of the articles already, but there are a few here and there I haven't seen yet, but I haven't gotten a good chance to just sit and read it yet.
So, expect some reviews in the near future, I've got a lot of fodder for that now.
In metrics news, numbers haven't starting petering out yet. I think my blog has such a "long tail," there is a ton of stuff to see, so even one new viewer that sees one thing they like has a lot of backlog to go through. The content is somewhat consistent as well, so if someone likes some things here, they probably like a lot of things here.
Still haven't thought of what to do for the new paradigm for the new year. Getting close to thinking about recording/streaming roll20 games. Maybe video blogging, but I have no experience with video production software, so worried about making an embarrassing mess with that. If you have any ideas of what you'd like to see from this blog in the future, let me know.

  1. Interesting, what do you mean by more mechanical commentary?

    1. You do a good job of writing a backstory in the post, but an interesting extra thing to add is what compelled decisions of particular attribute levels, skills, traits, etc, or what constraints, if any you were operating under when designing the character (I needed to make the character fit a certain budget, I didn't have a budget, etc.)
Not a must-have, but a nice to have.

    2. That's a good point, I guess I see making characters more as a narrative exercise than mechanical one. I'll see if I can work on that for the next one!
